Book of Mormon reaches 140-millionth milestone
MANILA CITY 10 September 2008  The Philippine Star  The 140-millionth copy of the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ was recently distributed, passing another milestone in the book's history. Since it was first published in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been taken worldwide by over a million missionaries. It is currently available in 107 languages. In 2003, Book magazine named the Book of Mormon one of the "20 Books That Changed America". In October 2007, the late church president Gordon B. Hinckley described its modern influence: "Through all these years critics have tried to explain it. They have spoken against it. They have ridiculed it. But it has outlived them all, and its influence today is greater than at any time in its history."

The Book of Mormon has been described as the "keystone" of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church members accept it as scripture and use it side by side with the Bible in their preaching and personal study. The book has attracted significant attention since its first printing in 1830. Adherents to the Mormon faith have revered it, critics have questioned its authenticity and scholars have approached it from multiple disciplines, such as literature, anthropology and archaelogy.

In 1981 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints published its most current edition of the Book of Mormon, the first since 1920, with additions to aid the reader. Chapter summaries, footnotes, and introduction, an index, and other information - all of which are not considered scripture - were added or expanded to help the reader navigate through the book and compare scriptures in the Old and New Testaments. Latter-day saints maintain that the Book of Mormon is of divine origin and thus, with the Bible, a member of the royal family of scripture.
