Festive decorations and family reunions, going out with peers and friends and loved ones are ways which usually characterize the Christmas season. But for single men and women of the Church who are on missions, they commemorate the season in an unforgettable way.
I could not help but ask Randy, my husband how he celebrated Christmas during his mission. He was served in Philippines Manila Mission.
“Those were among the best and memorable Christmases I had”, he said. “Being away from home was tough and sounds lonely, but it was very comforting knowing that you are in Lord’s vineyard and He is mindful of you”, he added.
Elder Villareal of Philippines Angeles Mission shared that it was like any other normal day, they teach their investigators. It was a long day of work and although its Christmas missionaries still have to follow the rule of the lights being out by 10:00 in the evening. He and his companion had a very simple dinner of lugaw (congee).
I cannot forget how missionaries in our former ward find time to join the choir and sing Christmas carols to those not of our faith. The carols they sang became away for them to introduce the gospel.
“When I was still on my mission, I would become emotional when the Christmas season comes. But the thought of celebrating it with strangers you meet along the streets, hearing inspirational messages from my mission president during devotionals, and receiving food from members who devoted time to cook for you—I realized that the activities were simple but they were the most meaningful Christmases I’ve had”, Randy shared.
Missionaries throughout the world are the representatives of Jesus Christ. Though they are far from their families and friends during a special season like Christmas, they are bringing the message of the season of peace on earth and good will towards men through the gospel.
