Making a Marriage Last

Bon and Corazon Reyes have been married for 34 years. They started out life as newly-weds in an apartment in Quezon City. Early on, they thought it best that Corazon should stay home and watch over the kids and only Bon will have a full-time job. This worked out fine until their third child came and they had to transfer to Pampanga. Bon travelled everyday to and from Manila for his job. The everyday travel was not only exhausting to Bon but the transportation expenses also cost him much of his salary. “With a family of three kids, every centavo counted,” said Bon.

Even under this circumstance they decided to stick to their original plan of Connie not working and it went on for several more years. “We are grateful that our families helped us out, and somehow we survived with the Lord’s assistance,” Bon added.

Corazon said that keys to their lasting marriage are their testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and their dedicated service to the church. She said that “Because our marriage is founded on the gospel, we genuinely trust, love, and respect each other.” Bon served in several church leadership positions throughout their married life. Serving as a bishop for 14 years, Corazon was a supportive wife to Bon. She patiently endured the long waits and all the little sacrifices that came with her husband’s callings. She said that Bon took good care of their family and managed to perform well in his church responsibilities at the same time.

They now both happily serve as Family History service missionaries in the Bacolod Mission. They are blessed with 5 children, 4 served full-time missions. They have 2 grandchildren.
